Walter Wooten’s World War II Service

Walter Wooten served as a U.S. Navy anti-aircraft gunner during World War II, escorting Allied convoys aboard the USS Walter S. Brown and USS Underhill across the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific. He survived the July 1945 destruction of the Underhill by a Japanese suicide torpedo and received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the attack.
