Important Note for Vietnam-Era Veterans (Veterans Discharged Less Than 62 Years Ago)
• Please allow extra time for research. Military personnel files for veterans discharged less than 62 years ago are still protected by federal privacy rules. Because of that, there are additional permissions, requirements and government processing steps we must work through before we can access the full file. Right now, that process is taking approximately 12 months.
• Military personnel files become fully open to the public 62 years after a veteran leaves military service. Records newer than that require additional authorization and processing.
• If the veteran is living, federal regulations require the veteran to provide signed permission before we can request the full military personnel file.
• If the veteran is deceased, federal regulations require an eligible next of kin to provide authorization before we can request the full file.
We will provide you with the required forms and walk you through how to complete them. They are short and straightforward. Once completed, we handle submitting the paperwork and working with the appropriate federal agencies to obtain the records.
